Mold processing process at Pavico

Understanding the mold processing process will help customers feel more confident and save time and effort when choosing a service. So, what are the steps involved in creating a mold? In this article, Pavico will provide a detailed explanation of the processing process currently being implemented at the company. We invite you to read along.

1. Receiving Customer Ideas/Designs/Drawings

The first step in the mold processing process at Pavico is to receive customer ideas according to their requirements. When a customer needs a mold, they will provide information about their idea, rough sketches, or drawings. Pavico’s staff will collect and compile the information as comprehensively as possible to send it to the design department.

2. Idea Generation and 2D/3D Product Design

The design department will use all the customer’s requirements and their mold-making expertise to generate ideas and create 2D and 3D drawings of the product. This step is crucial and may take more time to create drawings that meet the customer’s requirements. The process of generating ideas and creating 2D drawings will be discussed with the customer for revisions and final data confirmation.

3. 3D Printing of the Product

Once the customer has approved the ideas and drawings, the design department will send the product for 3D printing. The purpose of this step is to provide the customer with the most detailed view of their product. 3D printing simulates the actual product closely, allowing the customer to have a comprehensive understanding. This helps avoid problems later on, especially after the final product is completed.

4. Sending 3D Models and 2D Drawings for Customer Approval

After 3D printing is completed, the 3D model and 2D drawings will be sent to the customer for another round of approval. Depending on the customer’s location, these files can be sent via email or delivered directly to the customer for evaluation. If there are no issues to be addressed, the customer will proceed to approve and sign a contract to proceed with the mold design on the material.

Because mold production involves significant costs and there are few contractors, customers should carefully review and adjust the drawings if they are not completely satisfied. In this step, design experts will assist in addressing all customer inquiries regarding mold-making services.

5. Mold Design

Once the drawings have been finalized with the customer, Pavico’s design experts will proceed with the crucial step in mold processing: designing the mold on software and selecting the materials. The primary material used for molds is cast steel to achieve the highest hardness after heat treatment, preventing deformation when molding or blowing bottles later on.

Mold design is critical and plays a decisive role in whether the final product meets the customer’s standards and requirements. Therefore, it requires a high level of focus and absolute precision in every detail. Complex molds may need to be divided into multiple stages, demanding high skills and expertise. A detailed production plan is essential, including a list of standard components required for mold processing from start to finish.

6. CNC Machine Programming

Once the mold design is completed, the design team will proceed to program the CNC machine to create mold processing data on CAD/CAM software. This step generates a complete file to prepare for the detailed mold processing stage.

7. Mold Processing

Mold processing at Pavico involves collaboration between the design, technical, and modern machinery departments. This step is crucial because it requires processing each small detail before assembling the complete mold. It includes milling, grinding, and CNC machining based on programmed files and detailed drawings.

8. Heat Treatment for Desired Hardness

After the mold details have been completed, but the hardness of the cast steel does not meet the requirements, the molds undergo a heat treatment process. This step uses high heat to temper the steel to achieve the highest hardness, preventing deformation when molding or blowing bottles later on.

9. Inspection and Measurement

Despite meticulous work in the design and mold processing stages, the mold’s components are measured and inspected again by technical experts to ensure there are no deviations. This step is crucial for determining the success of the assembly process.

10. Assembly

After confirming that there are no errors in the measurement and inspection stages, the mold components are transferred to the assembly stage based on the previously approved drawings. This step is also carried out by Pavico’s technical experts, who work with high concentration and precision to assemble mold plates and components into a complete mold, as depicted in the 3D drawings and models previously approved by the customer.

11. Polishing

After design and machining, mold components are in a raw state, rough, and may have burrs. After assembly, the mold is sent to the polishing department. This meticulous step is particularly important for molds with many small details and sharp angles.

The finished product, after mold processing and polishing, will be smooth, shiny, and free of burrs both inside and outside. Pavico’s quality control (QC) team will check it once more to ensure it meets the standards before transferring it to storage. During the QC check, the technical team will continue to manufacture supporting parts for the mold’s transportation.

12. Handover to the Customer

The customer care department will provide feedback and include mold documentation, then send it to the customer along with a scheduled delivery date.

On the delivery date, the mold will be carefully packaged and delivered to the customer’s pre-arranged address. Upon receiving the mold, the customer will inspect it, cross-referencing it with the 2D drawings and 3D models that Pavico provided earlier. If there are no issues, the customer proceeds to make the remaining payment, concluding the mold processing process.
